June 18, 2004, Newsletter Issue #3: Starting An Animal Assisted Therapy Program-Funding

Tip of the Week

Of course, if you can`t find the kind of program you would like, you could always start one of your own. Billions of dollars are available every year for worthy causes. Animal assisted therapy certainly qualifies. Grants.gov is a great source for this information. The site is very easy to navigate. It will help you find a source and provides information on how to apply. Grants.gov simplifies the grants management process and has information on over 900 grant programs from the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. Over $360 billion is provided annually to state and local governments, academia, not-for-profits and other organizations.

Applicants should also consider large corporations as possible sources for funds. Many such as Coors or Budweiser, two of the giant beer companies, have specifically donated money in the past for therapeutic therapy programs. Fundraisers such as a Ride-A-Thons in which riders embark on a trail and obtain sponsors or a dinner auction are two creative ways to go to generate funding for a program.
